I. A Discarded Image
Man is woven into the fabric of the universe…. Man lives with the stars. The course of the sun and the moon leaves its mark on his life.[1]
The heavens were once looked to for guidance, not in a superstitious sense (rejected as far back as Genesis, which in part functions as a polemic against astrological determinism) but as ordering realities. The patterns of the cosmos were seen to be grounded in beauty, intelligibility, and regularity that could be apprehended and put to use in daily life as a source of orientation – practical, moral, and spiritual alike. That vision of, and dependence upon, the cosmological framework has been abandoned. To account for the shift, we must first return to the medieval worldview, when the heavens mattered as an objective order, received as a meaningful and legible expression of God’s sustaining and directing care.
This understanding finds one of its clearest expressions in the works of Dante. Years ago in a class on the poet, one of my professors suggested that we “skip all the astronomy stuff,” a sentiment one might sympathize with when confronted with so many abstruse images. Let two examples suffice: in the beginning of Vita Nuova, written a quarter century before the Divine Comedy, Dante looked back to the end of his ninth year, while Beatrice was entering hers. He described his own age as nine revolutions of the earth around the sun, the relatively small cycle of a solar year. But as Beatrice was his beatitude and guide to God, he chose to reckon her age according to the largest movement he knew: the immense, multi-millennial cosmological cycle of the precession of the equinoxes: “so long that in its course the starry heaven had moved toward the region of the East one twelfth part of one degree.”[2]
Then in the Comedy itself, immediately following the opening invocation of the third canticle, when Dante is still in the Garden of Eden in Purgatory and just about to commence the journey to Paradise, he says:
The lamp of the world rises to mortal view
From various stations, but at that point which joins
Four circles with three crosses, it soars through
To a happier course in happier conjunction….[3]
The image is that of the sun rising at the equinoctial point, specifically the vernal equinox or the first point of Aries, called that despite being in Pisces due to the precession of the equinoxes; astronomically, it is the zero point of sidereal time, analogous to Greenwich’s zero longitude. The four circles are the Equinoctial Colure (the Great Circle passing through both celestial poles and both equinox points); the ecliptic (the sun’s path); the celestial equator (earth’s equator projected into the heavens); and the celestial horizon (the one circle that is relative to the observer). At the equinox, at the moment Dante perceives it, all the circles converge; the first three cross the celestial circle of the horizon at the same point, producing a striking image of three crosses in perfect balance, limning a cruciform halo, the cross within a circle traditionally reserved in art for Christ alone.
One might be justified in asking what these and other cosmological passages are doing in a poem written in the vernacular and circulating hand-to-hand in manuscript, reaching beyond the learned elite to the “everyman,” as Dante intended.[4] It is likely that only scholars thought about the precession of the equinoxes. But everyone, living without the distractions of screens, without the light pollution plaguing us today, and with weather, time, and the seasons central to agriculture, quite simply looked up more than we do. They paid attention, were familiar with the rhythmic regularities of the heavens, and knew the night sky the way they knew the faces of those they loved.
Beyond farmers, there were two groups for which knowledge of the cosmos was especially essential: sailors and monastics. Those adept at navigation, whether geographically as wayfarers on land or sea, or spiritually as cloistered religious, were relied upon, each in their own way, to orient others, secure the rhythms of daily life, and align earthly practice with divine/celestial order. Celestial navigation is one of the most ancient of arts, mentioned in Homer and Virgil. St. Paul, writing on his shipwreck during a northeaster, says, “when the ship was caught and could not face the wind, we gave way to it and were driven.... they began the next day to throw the cargo overboard; and the third day they cast out with their own hands the tackle of the ship. And when neither sun nor stars appeared for many a day… all hope of our being saved was at last abandoned.”[5] Hope was not abandoned when they were driven by the wind, nor when they had to throw the cargo overboard, nor even when they had to divest the ship of its necessary gear, but when they could no longer be guided by the stars.
We dismiss sundials as wildly inaccurate, yet in a real sense they are wildly exact.
As celestial navigation developed, clocks provided greater accuracy in finding the longitude, but they first emerged in the context of monastic needs for regulating the canonical hours of prayer. The monks’ Opus Dei, the great Work of God, is the Divine Office, the cycle of communal prayer meant to baptize every moment, to make time transparent to grace. It was important that the hours be tied to real, cosmological time and not arbitrary hours, for time measured by the heavens is neither neutral nor a matter of human convenience; it is obedience written into nature, which the monks embody by attuning themselves to it. The monastic bellringer (the Latin clocca, bell, gives us “clock”) relied on sundials by day and water clocks by night to call monks to prayer, yet clouds obscured the sun, and water froze in winter. Something else was needed. The escapement mechanism, crucial to mechanical clocks, emerged amid efforts to build elaborate astronomical models in churches and monasteries. As Robertus Anglicus noted in 1271, while perfect astronomical accuracy might remain elusive, clockmakers were striving to create a wheel that would turn in strict accordance with the equinoctial circle;[6] it was the invention of the escapement that ultimately made such accurate mechanical clocks, first mentioned in literature by Dante, possible.[7]
Clocks spread from monasteries to the larger ecclesiastical and civic world. Medieval public astronomical clocks, of which the one in Prague is the most famous, functioned as mechanical astrolabes. Their rotating dials displayed the daily motion of the stars, Sun, and Moon against the observer’s horizon and meridian lines (the celestial counterpart of terrestrial longitude), the position of the first point of Aries, the annual progression of the Sun and planets along the zodiac, the lunar phases, and even eclipses and tides.
Though mechanical, these clocks were anything but mechanistic. They did not reflect a reduction of creation to the machine-like universe of William Paley’s Watchmaker God. Instead, they mirrored the cosmos—understood as an emblem of divine reason—making tangible the union of understanding and desire, of logos and eros, and calling human life into harmony with that order. From guiding travelers on land and sea to marking the hours of the liturgy and calling monks to prayer, clocks united practical orientation with spiritual summons, drawing human life toward fellowship and encounter with the divine. In tracing the movements of the constellations and planets, clocks reflected the rational order of creation, revealing the visible signs of the Logos, the reason that permeates all things. They were never intended merely to mark the passage of hours; they were living models of the heavens, themselves manifestations of God’s creative love, whose precise and graceful movements offered a vision of cosmic harmony and beauty that invited emulation (imitatio), and, ultimately, contemplative devotion.
II. Flight into Abstraction
One day this will be an airborne life. But by then men will have forgotten how to fly; they will be passengers on machines whose conductors are carefully promoted to a familiarity with labeled buttons, and in whose minds the knowledge of the sky and the wind and the way of the weather will be as extraneous as passing fiction.[8]
Aviators too used “the stars as mile posts across the endless vault of the heavens,”[9] but Beryl Markham’s vision extends far beyond navigation. She foresaw not merely a technological advance, but a loss of attentiveness. The sky that once trained human vigilance, teaching orientation through the rhythms of Sun, Moon, stars, and planets, has largely vanished from ordinary experience. Familiarity, once gained by patient observation over time, is replaced by indifference: such knowledge is seen as unnecessary, superfluous, easily replaced by “labeled buttons” (or, today, frictionless digital intermediaries). What remains is retained as notional fragments, perhaps remembered from science classes, rather than lived reality.
Modernity, here as elsewhere, introduced a rationalistic-fideistic split. On one side stands the exact science of astrophysics; on the other, the relegation of meaning in the heavens to astrology. Between them, the sky itself disappears as a bearer of the order, the Logos, built into creation. This division did not arise all at once, but accelerated through successive abstractions, nowhere more clearly than in our understanding of time.
What we ordinarily call “the correct time” is already at a double remove from reality: an abstraction of an abstraction. We dismiss sundials as wildly inaccurate, yet in a real sense they are wildly exact. As one traditional sundial motto has it: “The clock may mistake the hours of the day, but the orb of the sun doth ne’er go astray.”A properly set sundial gives Local Apparent Time, the actual solar time of a particular place, where noon is the precise moment the sun crosses one’s meridian. When Dante wants to let us know it is noon, he says that the sun is at the meridian, the line that moves “here to there according to point of view,”[10] for it is not fixed like the equator, but changes with the observer.
Local Mean Time introduces the first layer of abstraction. It averages solar time by means of a fictitious sun, ignoring the seasonal variation in the sun’s apparent speed caused by Earth’s elliptical orbit, and presuming an untilted axis. Zone time adds a second abstraction, assigning a single mean time to everyone within a fifteen-degree longitudinal band, regardless of their actual relation to the sun. This system arose from the practical demands of railroads. In North America, U.S. and Canadian railroads jointly adopted standard time zones on November 18, 1883 (the “Day of Two Noons”) and governments soon followed where commerce had led.
By the 1970s, timekeeping was detached entirely from astronomy with the advent of the atomic clock.[11] By the 1990s, navigation itself was severed from the sun, moon, stars, and planets through GPS.[12] Markham’s warning proved prescient: reality increasingly presents itself as something second-hand, mediated, and abstract, known through instruments and interfaces rather than through disciplined attention to the natural order. The sky, once a source of orientation and meaning, becomes, at last, “extraneous as passing fiction.”
III. A Recovered Attentiveness
It is telling that in the last decade, after having eliminated it, the Naval Academy returned celestial navigation to its curriculum as a hedge against technological failures: in a digital age, we cannot afford to lose the ability to orient ourselves by the rhythms of creation, grounding ourselves in the order of nature. Even our most conventional signs should be rooted in the natural order of things: in the rhythms of days and nights, of seasons and years, and even in the rhythms of our own bodies (we live by circadian time, and, poetically, iambic meter echoes the beat of the human heart). Grace perfects nature, but only if nature is first presupposed. This is no Luddite rejection of such things as uniform time, which remains essential for modern life, obviously not just for trains but for all of shared civil order. Still, there is a vital distinction between employing these and other abstract conventions and permitting them to become the sole measure of what we know and experience.
If we reject the guidance the Sun, stars, and seasons provide for neutral, purely instrumental metrics, something vital in our perception of reality erodes. We grow less open to transcendence, a loss that carries over into the formation of our lives as a whole. Time untethered from the rhythms of creation goes hand in hand with the loss of being received as gift, and what follows is that our ontology becomes mechanized, our epistemology functional, our ethics procedural. We find ourselves displaced, from nature, from others, and finally from the Creator who reveals himself precisely in and through that creation.
Alternatively, the order of the cosmos revealed in the celestial horologe makes manifest the fact that this very instant is irreducibly particular, not abstract, and locates us some where, some real place—under these stars, in this turning of the earth, at this unrepeatable point in the history of creation. To say instead of “4:00 AM,” what Dante does—“the Wain lies over Caurus and the Fishes flash on the horizon”[13] (Pisces rising in the east, the Big Dipper positioned in the northwest)—is to situate a moment not merely on a schedule, but within the cosmos, and thus before God. To recover this way of seeing is not to reject modern timekeeping, but is a joyful recognition that this moment is different from any other before it, that God’s eye is on the sparrow, on the smallest nunc (now) of the nunc et in hora mortis nostrae.
When the earth first touches heaven in the Divine Comedy, Dante calls upon Urania, the muse of astronomy and the cosmic harmony, to help him.[14] To see the cosmos as a divine gift that provides guidance for earthly existence is to encounter truth, goodness, and beauty woven into the very order of creation. To receive it as gift is to be formed in gratitude, and to be conformed to “the love that moves the sun and other stars.”
